Bold Moves for Schools

Sustaining Innovation: Moving to a Lateral Leadership Model in Our School

Essential Question: How can we prepare our learners for the future?

What type of leadership model is responsive to modern learning environment?

What type of leadership model will sustain our innovation?

What are we learning through our own efforts at transformation that can help our learners?

What are potential next steps moving forward?

Date: April 17, 2018- Tuesday

Time: 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM

Who should attend: Principals, superintendents, teacher leaders and interested community members.

Focus:  As design plans emerge to support innovation, it is critical to consider approaches to sustain the momentum.  Our last session will reflect on the progress made in our settings and lessons learned.  A key focus will be on Lateral Leadership Models predicated on partnerships with a distinctively different look at skills and talents in a professional group versus roles and hierarchy.   In short, if we are attempting to modernize our program structure and learning experiences then perhaps we must consider leadership model upgrades as well.   We will brainstorm and draft potential next steps into the summer and ensuing school year to support our group in sustaining their exciting bold moves. Some of our specific areas of focus will be:

  • Consider Lateral Leadership Models and the differences with hierarchical and distributive models.
  • Necessary conditions to sustain innovation and growth
  • Consider who are key support people based on talent and not role.
  • Reflect on student perceptions of transformation goals and progress
  • Examine progress / regress for participants
  • Identify the most significant lessons learned
  • Begin drafting potential next steps to sustain the growth and the progress
  • Outline possible site visits
  • Consider potential summer plans to continue the work both on program structures and program offerings.
  • Draft possible 2018-2019 support services

Deliverables:

Develop formal reflections on progress of innovation design teams and school efforts.

Action plan for summer 2018 and into the 2018-2019 school year.
